Contact Literacy for Life Foundation at 403-652-5090 or literacy@telus.net for information on classes where an alternate number is not listed.  Calling the alternate number will ensure the most up to date information however Literacy for Life staff is always available for questions and will ensure you are directed to the right location and number.  Registration for some programs is carried out by the partners.  Sessions are open to all families who live in the Municipal District of Foothills.

Books for Babies

photo of handmade Books for Babies bagMom and baby receive a special bag sewn by volunteer community members from the Public Health Nurse that includes books, a library membership for baby and information on the importance of reading and talking to baby. At the 18 month visit with the Health Nurse the mom and toddler receive an envelope with another book, library membership, and information on reading and eye care.

Are you looking for a volunteer activity? The Books for Babies Committee is looking for people - any individuals or groups - in the Municipal District of Foothills #31 to sew bags for the Books for Babies Program. Click here for directions for making bags and where to drop them off.

Building Bridges Adult Literacy

  • Trained volunteer tutors provide one-to-one help to learners, 18 and older with essential skills training, basic reading, math and speaking skills.
  • English as a Second Language classes (Fee for class)
  • GED preparation classes (Fee for class)

Building Blocks
Family Literacy Program

Open to all parents with children between the ages of birth - 17. Trained Literacy Builders go into the home. The Builder shares ideas about learning and reading that gives parents tools that will help them help their children. This program is available on an ongoing basis from September to June.

Rhythm and Rhyme/Toddler Time

Classes are offered in communities across the Municipal District to parents of preschoolers. Each community has different age restrictions. Parents are taught rhymes, songs and story telling. Parents learn the importance of oral language development for their child's literacy growth. Activities also help with child development and keeping baby/child happy.

High River:

"Rhythm and Rhyme" and "Toddler Time" classes are offered at the High River Library – Phone the library at 652-2917. Book Buddies and Food Fun are offered at the High River Parent Link.  Phone the Parent Link at (403) 652-8633

Toddler Time: High River Library - Tuesdays 10:00am, April 8th-May 20th, 2008

"Rhythm and Rhyme" sessions are also offered at the Medicine Tree Manor (seniors lodge). Special conditions are in effect with this class. Babies must be under 1 year, and there is an expectation to share the babies with the seniors that participate from the lodge. Phone Literacy for Life Foundation for further information.

Okotoks:

  • "Toddler Time" classes are offered at the Okotoks Library. For information call the Library at 403-938-2220
  • "Rhythm and Rhyme" are offered in Okotoks. Presently sessions are held at the Okotoks Library and other locations in the community. For information on these classes call Literacy for Life Foundation.
  • "Rhythm and Rhyme" sessions are also offered at the Sandstone Lodge in Okotoks. Special conditions are in effect with this class. Babies must be under 1 year, and there is an expectation to share the babies with the seniors that participate from the lodge. Phone Literacy for Life Foundation for further information.

Turner Valley:

  • Rhythm and Rhyme classes are available in Turner Valley at the United Church. Call Literacy for Life Foundation.

Black Diamond:

  • "Rhythm and Rhyme" sessions are offered at the High Country Seniors Lodge.  Special conditions are in effect with this class. Babies must be under 1 year, and it is expected that babies are shared with the seniors form the lodge who participate. Phone Literacy for Life Foundation for further information.

Pool Rhyme Time

Pool Rhyme Time is an innovative program that combines aquatic instruction with rhymes, songs and stories. This program is available for public use and may be photocopied and adapted for use in your community. The only restriction is that Literacy for Life Foundation is acknowledged as the developer of the program.
