HistoryLiteracy for Life Foundation started with the introduction of the Building Blocks Family Literacy Program to High River and area. This program was a pilot project began by the Rainbow Literacy Society an organization that provides literacy services in Vulcan County. This project was looking at ways to provide family literacy in rural communities. The Rainbow Literacy Society included High River and area in the pilot and had people from the area as members of an advisory committee. One staff from the area was hired to coordinate the program. Through the introduction of the Building Blocks Program it was shown that the Municipal District of Foothills #31 lacked a body that coordinated and promoted literacy. Members from the advisory committee and other interested community members met in May of 1997 to discuss literacy issues. In May of 1998 the community group became a non-profit society called Literacy for Life Foundation, which took over the administration of Building Blocks and expanded to cover the Municipal District of Foothills #31 with some service provided to Eden Valley, a First Nations community. They received charity status in January of 1999. Programming grew to include programs for adults, families and education and public awareness activities. |
