Wheels for Words Event a Success

Wheels for words was a great success with 88 enthusiastic people indulging in a tasty steak and Ball game on a beautiful sunny Saturday evening on June 12th at the Seaman Stadium. The goal was to bring the message of what we do to a larger audience and that was most certainly what happened. Big thanks to everyone who sold tickets for the event with a big thank you to High River Smittys, Cargill and Total Auto Care for their special support of our event. Our event team is already brainstorming for ways to improve your experience for next year so stay tuned for updated information on our new website set to launch in September, 2010.

Literacy for Life Foundation is in your community every day.
We work with individuals and families building the skills needed for everyday living.

Give the gift of “Literacy for Life” today.
Help us “Get the Word Out!” Literacy is more than books.

What do you think when you hear the word “literacy”?
For many people it means reading and writing.

But what about...

  • using and filling out forms and documents?
  • making change or balancing your cheque book?
  • being able to listen and understand others?
  • using a computer, cell phone or other technology?

photos of everyday situations where some form of literacy is needed

Literacy for Life Foundation wants to Get the Word Out! about literacy and what it really means. You can help! We believe that literacy and learning are part of everyday life, for life.

Help us...

  • give books to newborns and their families to get them started on the path to “Literacy for Life” through our Books for Babies program
  • work with parents and their children in their own homes providing information and ideas to make learning fun through our Building Blocks program
  • involve our seniors through our Rhythm & Rhyme programs
  • provide opportunities for adults to expand their skills and reach their potential through our GED and volunteer tutoring programs
  • offer new Canadians English Language Learning programs so they can become valuable contributors to our communities

SAD BUT TRUE!

“Wheels for Words” Charity Motorcycle Ride will not occur in 2009 or the foreseeable future.  We would like to thank all riders and their passengers, volunteers, sponsors and individuals that have pledged in the past for your participation and support in this event.

The Ride has been important in our growth as an organization and has created awareness and friendships with individuals that now recognize the value of the work that is done through Literacy for Life Foundation.  At this point in our organization’s growth we have the opportunity to take time in 2009 to evaluate and plan our direction in terms of fundraising.  Through this planning stage we will look at the most effective method of getting our community involved in supporting our programs.  Another part of the plan will be looking at creating awareness.  It is critical in these economic times that business, community and individuals understand that for success in the workplace, family and community we need to pay attention to more than just the mechanics of reading and writing.  Numeracy, critical thinking, problem solving, social skills, listening, document use and computer skills  are all part of the literacy package

Approximately 50% of individuals THAT CAN READ WILL NOT BE ABLE TO READ the paragraph below.

i cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whotuit a pboerlm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt!

Imagine how difficult and frustrating it could be for those 50% that will not be able to read this paragraph or other things around them every day.  What important information are they missing and how will this impact on their life?

Did you know that 49% of Albertans have difficulty with everyday reading and writing activities and that half of that group have major difficulties with day- to-day literacy?  Imagine living your life not being able to read simple things such as traffic signs or the directions for giving your child’s medicine!  Literacy for Life Foundation is here to help adults within our community acquire those essential skills needed for economic and social success.

Help Your Neighbours Master Literacy

  2.  Call us and we will give you ideas as to how you can help

The Future

We are planning some new and exciting events and happenings and we will keep in touch so you can continue to be part of them.  Again we thank you for your past donations to Literacy for Life. With your renewed support in 2009, we will continue to help people in our community who struggle with challenges around literacy every day.

The Ride has given us great memories.  Click here to view pictures from the 2007 and 2008 Wheels for Words Charity Ride. The rides  have been a success due to the support of businesses, volunteers and service clubs.   Click here to visit our sponsor page.

Starting Paragraph-

Mandy and Kelsey were sisters that lived on a ranch. They were both were very curious young ladies who were always getting into trouble. They didn't mean to but because they were so curious they often went where they shouldn't go. One day they went for a horse back ride. They usually went the same way every time but this trip was a little different. They saw a cave in the side of the hill and Mandy decided they needed to explore. They climbed to the cliff, pulled the branches away from the opening and…………….

June 4th 2006

The 3rd Annual "Wheels and Words" Charity Ride was a resounding success. 66 bikes were registered up from 13 in
2005. $9,200.00 was raised for two great causes - Literacy for Life Foundation and FREMS Emergency Mountain Bike Team.

Riders enjoyed beautiful weather, great scenery, and prizes galore. The scrabble run was a hit and 110 people sat down for a steak barbeque donated by Cargill and cooked to perfection by the High River Kinsmen. Check back in January for information on the 2007 ride to be held on June 3rd.

Thank you to all the local riders who collected pledges, invited others to the ride and to the businesses that provided donations and support.
