SAD BUT TRUE!

“Wheels for Words” Charity Motorcycle Ride will not occur in 2009 or the foreseeable future.  We would like to thank all riders and their passengers, volunteers, sponsors and individuals that have pledged in the past for your participation and support in this event.

The Ride has been important in our growth as an organization and has created awareness and friendships with individuals that now recognize the value of the work that is done through Literacy for Life Foundation.  At this point in our organization’s growth we have the opportunity to take time in 2009 to evaluate and plan our direction in terms of fundraising.  Through this planning stage we will look at the most effective method of getting our community involved in supporting our programs.  Another part of the plan will be looking at creating awareness.  It is critical in these economic times that business, community and individuals understand that for success in the workplace, family and community we need to pay attention to more than just the mechanics of reading and writing.  Numeracy, critical thinking, problem solving, social skills, listening, document use and computer skills  are all part of the literacy package

Approximately 50% of individuals THAT CAN READ WILL NOT BE ABLE TO READ the paragraph below.

i cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno't mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whotuit a pboerlm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Imagine how difficult and frustrating it could be for those 50% that will not be able to read this paragraph or other things around them every day.  What important information are they missing and how will this impact on their life?

Did you know that 49% of Albertans have difficulty with everyday reading and writing activities and that half of that group have major difficulties with day- to-day literacy?  Imagine living your life not being able to read simple things such as traffic signs or the directions for giving your child’s medicine!  Literacy for Life Foundation is here to help adults within our community acquire those essential skills needed for economic and social success.
