Break the Code
Information or ability?
One of the reasons people can not read is they do not have the knowledge to break the code. There are many reasons that communication does not happen. Lack of knowledge and skill are two of them. 48% of adults in Alberta have difficulty with literacy that interferes in their day- to-day life. This can impact in many ways, such as:
- sending an email
- understanding what your doctor was telling you about your child’s illness
- making sense of safety instructions at work
- using your cell phone
- figuring out how to complete a job application form
- knowing whether you were given the correct change
- figuring out the dosage on your prescription
It's time to rethink what literacy means today. It's so much more than reading and writing. Literacy is about having the skills needed for every day living.

Decoded paragraph
The code below reads:
"Without the code it is impossible to read this sentence."

Pigpen Code
The Pigpen code is quite easy to learn. First, write out the whole alphabet in two grids, as shown on the left.
The lines of the grid are the "pigpen" and are used instead of the letters inside. If it's the second letter in the box, then it has a dot in the middle.
So an A looks like this.
And a B looks like this.
